In the early hours of Saturday morning, accounts surfaced of major explosions rocking Tehran, amid statements from Israel that it had carried out a preventative military action.
Loud Blasts and Smoke Witnessed in Central Tehran
As per on-the-ground reports, two powerful explosions were heard in the city on Saturday. Simultaneously, columns of dense smoke were observed billowing over central and eastern districts of the Iranian capital.
“The type of explosions indicates that this is a strike involving missiles,” one news agency reported, without immediately provide further details.
Background: Rising Strains and Recent Developments
The incident takes place against a background of sharply increased strains in the Middle East. Key events preceding this strike involve:
- US Military Buildup: A massive buildup of American warships in the region, including the movement of carrier strike groups.
- Diplomatic Negotiations: Latest discussions between the US and Iranian officials on Tehran's atomic program concluded without a deal, with indications of more talks planned.
- Official Rhetoric: Prior to the strike, a senior US official had described Iran as “the leading state sponsor of terrorism” and delivered warnings regarding its missile program.
- Diplomatic Deadline: Reportedly, a time limit of roughly two weeks had been presented to Iran to settle the nuclear dispute or face severe consequences.
Reaction from Tehran
In response to earlier allegations, Iranian officials had accused the United States of spreading “big lies” about its defensive capabilities. They dismissed claims about missile development and protest deaths as baseless.
The situation is fast-moving, with additional reports expected as events unfold.
