No fewer than 13 people killed and 98 hurt in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.

The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a route built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.

“We will meticulously determine what caused this accident,” affirmed the head of state.

The president announced that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The president stated plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those involved.

Major Initiative of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the immediate past president, whose time in office concluded the year before. This rail line was intimately linked to his administration's economic goals for the southeastern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Building Management and Risks Apprehensions

The construction of both train projects was supervised by the army, marking a notable expansion of its role in public projects. They were executed at an rapid pace, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had also raised significant concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This involves an previous accident this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-deadly derailments.

Demands for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a major opposition party urged an urgent pause in the development and management of all such projects.

This halt was requested pending a full independent investigation. The party stated that the loss of life "requires swift accountability."

In response, the national leader maintained that the train had been running in total adherence to all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and management of these national undertakings.
