One Piece Ends a 27-Year Era in 2026

It's the end of an iconic period for long-running series, with the production studio revealing a revised release plan for One Piece, which has been airing for more than 25 years and included dozens of non-canon storylines. Starting in January, once the Egghead Island arc wraps up, the animated series will go on a three-month break until April, when the next major arc kicks off.

New Release Strategy

From now on, the series will release two seasons every annually for a maximum of two dozen installments. Toei states this will help the anime to “explore further into the heart of the universe — incorporating more content, rhythm, and pacing of the original manga.” However, Toei end by promising “exciting surprises” during the series' break, which suggests additional related projects, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, scheduled to debut during this gap.

Previous Hiatus Benefits

The series anime had a six-month pause that began in late 2024 and ended in April 2025. The intermission was for the animators to improve the animation quality and let the comic to get further ahead to avoid a faster anime pace and repetitive summaries. The show couldn't benefit more from this respite, and it has been able to deliver viewers with countless fight scenes, high-quality animation, and reduced non-canon content than previously.

Embracing Seasonal Format

While a few summary installments sprouted up during this season, the benefits of this updated approach greatly outweigh the odd pause in the action. This additionally allows the manga, which is presently in the middle of the Elbaph arc, to gain more ground on the anime. According to the news, this may lead to one episode of the anime adapting one chapter, with some instead handling one and a half chapters or additional to make up for time.

This concludes of a generation for Japanese animation, as One Piece is the last big series to ditch the old-school way of creation, which prioritized airing for almost the entire year. This explains why iconic series such as Naruto, and of course One Piece have so many side stories, and the quality of the art can vary widely between installments and the next. Nowadays, series creation is structured in cours, with one or two maximum releasing each year, allowing for improved visuals and greater accuracy to the source material.
