Highlighted Choice

The Substance

The filmmaker's unflinching commentary addresses the demanding standards for women's appearance as well as the feared consequences of ageing. Hollywood star Demi Moore presents an inspired portrayal in the role of Elisabeth, a 50-year-old actress reduced to presenting a workout series on TV. Edged out by her unscrupulous employer Harvey, she turns to an enigmatic and terrifying procedure known as "The Substance". This generates a younger clone named Sue, resulting in an increasingly toxic connection among both women. This Friday, Paramount Plus

The Woman in Cabin 10 Film

This classic whodunit thriller features Keira Knightley in the role of Laura, a top-notch writer who opts for some time off from reporting on international wars to board a luxury cruise with a terminally ill Norwegian shipping heiress and donor, her husband, plus additional affluent guests. However when an enigmatic female falls into the sea overnight and everyone denies she ever existed, the reporter's sleuthing skills awaken. Streaming currently, the Netflix platform

Presence

The acclaimed director challenges his film-making abilities through this innovative ghostly tale filmed completely from the perspective of a ghost. After a clan including mother Rebekah and her distressed teen Chloe moves into their recent residence, the lens – AKA the Presence – shadows their actions. The teen shows signs of aware of the ghostly being, and the entity appears protective of her. Yet what is the reason? The premise is enjoyable that avoids overstaying, with a twist that could catch you off guard. Saturday 11 October, afternoon and evening times, the Sky channel

This Self-Referential Film

Cage embraces his eccentric image via this meta comedy caper. He acts as an egotistical film star playing himself who accepts a $1m payday to attend a birthday party in Mallorca for the wealthy superfan Javi. Hired by government spies to investigate the alleged criminal, his unique performing skills proves useful. This Saturday, 9pm, Channel 4

The Black Phone Horror

The director's contained scarefest remains effective despite the lack of a continuation. Set in the late 70s in Denver, several kidnappings has left the local kids on edge. When Finney is kidnapped by the villain and locked up in a dungeon, he dreads a fatal end. However, the disconnected phone mounted nearby continues to ring, with eerie communicators giving advice, as the prophetic visions of his sister Gwen might rescue him. A genuinely scary movie. This Saturday, nighttime, on Film4

The Tammy Faye Biopic

In the battle between God and Mammon, it's a knockout win for materialism in Michael Showalter's delightfully tacky film adaptation of the disgraced TV preacher and her criminal husband. Garfield acts as the venal Jim, who proclaims early on, claiming divine approval for wealth. He and Tammy Faye commence monetising the American public's spiritual convictions. It's a spectacle of poor styling, bad makeup and hypocrisy, yet Chastain achieves to depict the real-life figure in a likable light. Next Tuesday, 1.15am, Film4

Black Bag

This week's another release by the same director delivers a spy mystery as tight similar to the collars worn by the actor's intelligence officer. He receives a mission to identify a mole inside the organization out of five possibilities – among them is his spouse. Each performer excel of deadpan cool, resulting in an engaging psychological game of fact versus fiction takes place. Additional actors join in the clever spy entertainment. October 17th, 8.05am, 12.55pm, 8pm, Sky Cinema Premiere
